1. Place - „Diggers in Ilakaka“
First place goes to French-Madagascan photographer Rija Randrianasolo (pseudonym: Rijasolo). ‘Diggers in Ilakaka’ is part of a series on sapphire mines in Madagascar. It was the telling moment, exciting perspective, interesting com-position and strong contrast of this picture that won the jury over. M8, Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 (35 mm lens equivalent)

2. Place - „Fishing port.“
British photojournalist Richard Humphries (richprix) has been photographing in Southeast Asia for 12 years. ‘Fishing port’ shows two ice packers in the early morning in Pattani, Thailand. Despite the icy backdrop the workers are pouring with sweat; warm and cool tones, focus and blur – this picture is about opposites. Canon EOS 5D with EF 35 mm f/1.4L

naddis

3. Place - „The Oliveira Family“
US-American photojournalist Noah Addis (naddis) is working on a series on illegal settlements. ‘The Oliveira Family’ was photographed in São Paulo. Claudia and Robeval have obtained a single room for a lot of money and still no legal address. The child appears untroubled by the harsh realities. His world is his parents. M9, Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 Asph

Annibale Greco

4. Place - „Oscar, a hard life“
Annibale Greco documented the life of a street sweeper in Havana, Cuba. The photo ‘Oscar, a hard life’ stands out through the expressiveness of the protagonist, cinematographic com-position, two pictures in one, and the way the run-down apartment in the back-ground creates a context for Oscar. M7 and Summicron-M 35 mm f/2

Johannes Barthelmes

5. Place - „hija y madre“
Johannes Barthelmes wandered the streets of Havana with an M9 and Summarit-M 35 mm f/2.5 – with a few tricks he was able to enhance the picture with an analogue feel. The Cuban lady and her daughter had given the Berlin photographer shelter from the rain. ‘Hija y madre’ is the farewell picture

Allbee

6. Place - „Searching Water“
Initially Alberto Chollet (Allbee) from Switzerland asked the two girls in the Mongolian village of Narambulag for directions. They giggled and ran away to continue carting their water canister through the sand and endless solitude. ‘Searching Water’ was photographed with M8.2 and Elmarit-M 24 mm f/2.8 Asph (35 mm lens equivalent)

denchamb

7. Place - „KKK women“
The banality of evil: The whispering gesture, the heart-shaped ring and the polished finger nails of the ‘KKK Women’ juxtapose with the frightening hoods of the Ku Klux Klan members. US-American photographer Dennis Chamberlin (denchamb) captured this bizarre moment with his M4-P and Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 Asph

Thomas Stoffaneller

8. Place - „Smoke“
‘Smoke’ by Austrian Thomas Stoffaneller was photographed using a Summicron-M 35 mm f/2. Near the Vietnamese city of Hue farmers were burning scraps from the rice harvest. Alarming smoke clouds in the background, a farmer lighting up a cigarette in the front, a delicate nod to war photography from Vietnam – the combination is striking

StefanieKlaunzer

9. Place - „Catch me if you can!“
‘Catch me if you can!’ Stefanie Klaunzer from Austria took this picture at the orphanage in Kon Tum, Vietnam. The blurred running students, the sitting girl in front of a rather dreary learning environment and a strong reduction to black & white inform this dynamic, multi-layered photograph. M7, Summicron-M 35 mm f/2

formal

10. Place - „Naked Cowboy“
David Gray (formal) spotted this ‘Naked Cowboy’ in his hometown of Dublin. The show is over, the star leaves the stage, the onlooker looks sceptical. Was that funny or just tacky? The photograph features several details, such as the world ‘pay’ on the bus or the triangle formed by performer, shadow and onlooker. M6 with Summarit-M 35 mm f/2.5
